Painting with the Kitchen

This Art at Home project offers a new appreciation for food. Take in delicious smells and make a watercolor-like paint from the food in your kitchen. Let’s get started!

Step 1: Gather your materials - a few bowls or dishes to hold your food, paintbrushes, thick paper, water, paper towels, and a spoon or another material to mash your food into paint with.

Step 2: Get comfortable and begin to transform your food into paint of your chosen consistency.

Step 3: Create whatever you’d like!

The purpose

The purpose of this project is to appreciate our food for more than something we eat every day. When we look at our food in a different way, we can see its beauty in another light and transform it into art.

Inspiration

For this Art at Home project, I wanted to be fully present while painting so I could take in all of the smells. I used berries and cinnamon as my paint, but foods like beets, beans, coffee, tea, and tomatoes work just as well. Other spices and household items that can be used as paint include turmeric, paprika, and even vanilla extract. I hope this project brings you joy and a newfound appreciation for the food around you.
